Technical info on Italian phone numbers

  • Italy's telephone numbering system is regulated by Autorità per le Garanzie nelle Comunicazioni (AGCOM), the national regulatory authority for communication services.
  • Country code: Italy's country code is +39. When dialing from abroad, you need to use this code, followed by the area code and the local number.
  • Area codes: Italian area codes, also known as "prefissi," are two to four digits long and start with a zero (0). The length of the area code depends on the size of the city or town; larger cities generally have shorter area codes. For example, Rome has the area code 06, while a smaller town like Pisa has the area code 050.
  • Local numbers: Local numbers in Italy are usually between five and eight digits long, depending on the area code's length. The total number of digits, including the area code, is always ten. When dialing within Italy, you must include the area code, even for local calls.
  • Mobile numbers: Mobile phone numbers in Italy also use the +39 country code, followed by a three-digit mobile prefix and a six or seven-digit local number. Mobile prefixes usually start with a '3' (e.g., 320, 333, 347, etc.). It is important to include the mobile prefix when dialing a mobile number, even when calling from a landline within Italy.
  • Premium numbers and special services: Italy also has special numbers for premium services, toll-free numbers, and emergency services. Some examples include:
  • 800, 848, and 803 prefixes for toll-free numbers (numeri verdi)
  • 899 and 892 prefixes for premium-rate numbers
  • 112 for the European emergency number
  • 113 for police
  • 115 for fire service
  • 118 for emergency medical services
  • *If you need emergency service on your Italy FlyNumber please contact us directly, additional fees apply.
  • Note: When dialing Italian numbers from abroad, you must remove the leading zero in the area code. For example, to call a Rome landline from outside Italy, you would dial +39 6 xxxxxxxx.
