Some background on Minnesota and its area codes
Minnesota's telecommunications landscape is primarily served by six area codes: 218, 320, 507, 612, 651, and 763. The 612 area code, established in 1947, originally covered the entire state but now serves only Minneapolis and its immediate vicinity. The introduction of additional area codes was necessitated by population growth and increased phone usage.
The 218 area code, also one of the original codes from 1947, covers the northern part of Minnesota, including Duluth and the Iron Range. Area code 507 serves the southern region, including Rochester, home to the renowned Mayo Clinic. The 651 area code was split from 612 in 1998 to accommodate the St. Paul area.
Area codes 763 and 320 were introduced to manage demand in central and northwestern parts of the state. Area code 763 encircles Minneapolis, serving suburbs like Brooklyn Park and Maple Grove. The 320 area code, established in 1996, spans central Minnesota, connecting communities such as St. Cloud and Willmar.
