Some background on Nevada and its area codes
Nevada's area codes have evolved alongside its population growth and telecommunications needs. Initially, area code 702 covered the entire state upon its introduction in 1947. This area code primarily served the populous Las Vegas metropolitan area, which has driven much of the state's economic and demographic expansion.
Due to increasing demand for telephone numbers, Nevada introduced area code 775 in 1998. This new code was assigned to all regions outside the Las Vegas area, including Reno and Carson City. The split was necessary to alleviate the strain on 702, which had become overwhelmed by the rapid growth in southern Nevada.
As the need for additional numbers continued, area code 725 was introduced in 2014 as an overlay for the 702 region, providing additional numbering capacity without altering existing numbers. The overlay meant that residents in the Las Vegas area now had to dial ten digits for local calls, a change necessitated by the proliferation of mobile devices and other communication services.
