Some background on Oklahoma and its area codes
Oklahoma's area codes are primarily 405, 580, and 918. Area code 405, established in 1947, originally covered the entire state but has since been limited to central Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City. The introduction of additional area codes was necessitated by population growth and increased demand for telephone services.
In 1997, area code 580 was created as a split from 405, serving the western and southern parts of Oklahoma. This change was part of a larger trend to accommodate the rising number of communication devices. The implementation of 580 allowed for better distribution of numbers in less populated regions.
Area code 918 was introduced in 1953, covering northeastern Oklahoma, including Tulsa. In 2011, due to number exhaustion, area code 539 was added as an overlay. This overlay method enabled existing numbers to remain unchanged while allowing new numbers to be assigned within the same geographic region.
