Some background on Utah and its area codes
Utah's area code system began with the introduction of area code 801 in 1947, as part of the North American Numbering Plan. Covering the entire state initially, 801 was one of the original area codes, reflecting Utah's relatively low population density at the time.
As Utah's population grew, area code 435 was introduced in 1997 to serve the regions outside of the Wasatch Front, including areas such as Moab, St. George, and Logan. This geographical split relieved pressure on 801, which now primarily serves the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.
In 2009, to accommodate further growth, area code 385 was overlaid on 801, requiring ten-digit dialing within the region. This overlay was necessary due to the proliferation of mobile devices and increased demand for new numbers, reflecting Utah's rapid urban and technological development.
