Some background on Virginia and its area codes
Virginia's area codes have evolved to accommodate its growing population and telecommunications needs. The original area code, 703, was established in 1947, covering the entire state. Over time, as demand increased, new area codes were introduced, including 804 in 1973, which served central and southeastern Virginia, including Richmond.
By the late 20th century, further divisions were necessary. Area code 540 was introduced in 1995 to serve western and northern Virginia, excluding the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Subsequently, area code 757 was created in 1996 for the southeastern region, including Hampton Roads. These changes were driven by increased demand for phone numbers due to population growth and technological advancements.
The introduction of overlay codes further expanded Virginia's numbering plan. In 2001, area code 571 was overlaid on 703 to address number exhaustion. Similarly, area code 276 was implemented in 2001 for southwestern Virginia, and area code 434 was introduced in 2001 for the south-central region. These overlays allow for a more efficient distribution of phone numbers.
